9 October in Valencia: what it means and barbershop open in La Petxina

Barber Shop Valencia ready for 9 October

Special hours 9 October: La Petxina (C/ Juan Llorens 18) open. El Carmen (C/ Baja 50) closed.

9 October is the Day of the Valencian Community (Nou d’Octubre). It marks King Jaume I’s entry into Valencia in 1238 — a founding moment for Valencian identity. It is an official public holiday across the Comunitat and one of the city’s most meaningful dates.

What 9 October means in Valencia

Beyond a day off, 9 October is memory and identity: a civic procession with the Reial Senyera, an offering to Jaume I, the anthem, a mascletà, and in the afternoon the Moors and Christians parade. It is also Sant Donís, with the tradition of gifting a marzipan mocadorà. In 2026 the celebration has special weight as the 750th anniversary of Jaume I’s death.

What to do in Valencia on 9 October

  • Morning in the centre: follow the Civic Procession from Ajuntament square toward the Cathedral and the offering at Jaume I’s statue (Parterre / Alfons el Magnànim square).
  • Mascletà: after the procession, fireworks usually fire in Ajuntament square — powder, rhythm and festival energy.
  • Afternoon: Moors and Christians parade through the centre (Glorieta, Carrer de la Pau, Ajuntament…).
  • Sant Donís: buy or gift a mocadorà — Valencia’s sweet signature of the day.
  • Walk and terrace: after the events, enjoy a vermouth or lunch in El Carmen, Ruzafa or near La Petxina.
